Mini Properties Panel on Bowties

Alex Apostolou

Entering nodes on a bowtie can be slow process and one which is often challenged by a lack of desktop real-estate. The New Mini Properties Panel is here to solve some of those headaches.

If the Properties panel pops in from the right, then it takes up space, forcing users to make a decision to either make the bowtie smaller or accept that it will get covered by the pop-up dialog.

Also, there are a lot of fields on the Properties panel which are not necessary for the bowtie building phase and so they crowd the screen, overwhelm the eye and waste time.

We were bound to do something about this.

Imagine:

  • building a bowtie with keyboard, mouse or finger in record time and with minimal training
  • having a bowtie calculating residual risk in front of your eyes with zero technical understanding
  • selecting a bowtie perspective that will lead one of any number bowtie processes in an optimal way
  • a small dialog that pops up alongside a newly created node, requesting the information required for that step
  • identical user functionality both on-line and off-line (ok, no calculations in off-line mode, yet)
  • maintaining access to the great big Properties panel for when it is required

Setting the Bowtie Perspective

The first step is to set the bowtie perspective to reflect the fields that you want to see and edit, while you describe every node, as well as view the bowtie. Give it a name you’ll remember:

In this example, the Cause setup in the Perspective is as follows:

Causes appear like this in the bowtie:

And have a Mini-Properties panel like this:

Likewise, Control setup in the Perspective is as follows:

Controls appear like this in the bowtie:

And have a Mini-Properties panel like this:

Building the Bowtie

When creating a new node in a bowtie, the Mini-Properties panel pops up immediately on creation to allow population of the properties:

Enter the values and then click off the Mini-Properties panel for the values to be saved, or press CTRL+Enter.

Only once the values are saved will be bowtie calculate.

Note: This is a change from the earlier functionality, whereby all fields in the Properties panel changed to suit the new values, whereas the mini-Properties panel does not.
