Causal Groups

Tasman Mayers

Cause groups are new functionality implemented in RiskView which assists users in maintaining organisation in datasets through categorization of causes and standardising default likelihoods between causes of any given group.

Enabling Causal Groups in the Configuration Editor

For Causal Groups to be available in your RiskView environment they must be enabled in the configuration editor.

To enable causal groups:

Open the Configuration Editor from the Menu by Navigation to “My Profile” > “Configuration”

Select the current configuration and click load. In the global search bar, enter “causal”. Several items should appear.

Ensure “Causal Group Show” is toggled on, this enables cause groups in the RiskView environment.

Once changes have been made, progress through to review and then to apply changes.

Be aware that restarting the server instantly will impact the current work of any other users in your organisation.

Once Causal Groups have been enabled in RiskView, they can be interacted with and managed by users in a number of ways.

Managing Cause Grouping Within Risk Scenarios

Cause groups can be applied to different causes directly from within bowtie view of a risk scenario. To begin, open an Ad Hoc risk scenario.

Select an Ad Hoc risk scenario and click the bowtie button in the toolbar –> Select “Open Ad Hoc Risk Scenario”

Once the risk scenario has been opened the user can select a cause node by double clicking or right clicking and selecting properties.

Cause groups can then be managed from the cause groups section within the cause node’s properties.

The user can select either an existing causal group by clicking the drop-down arrow or create a new causal group by selecting the + icon.

Creating a new causal group will open a new interface where the various fields can be completed by the user:

Selecting Apply will create the new causal group and apply it to the cause node selected.

Alternatively, the user can double click a cause node to open its properties:

This is the simplest method of applying an existing cause group to a cause node.

When a Causal Group has been applied to a cause node, the colour of that causal group will be applied to the cause in bowtie view. The colours can be customised in cause group properties. This visualisation feature is beneficial for understanding determining factors behind each cause and categorising them accordingly.

The above example features the “working on active equipment” set to the “human factors” cause group.

Causal Groups can also be accessed from the Administration menu

Select Cause Groups from the RiskView Menu

Cause Groups can be managed from this menu: Created, Deleted and Edited

Open a Cause Group for editing by double clicking it. Selecting apply will save any changes made.
